A Study on the Persistent Non-attendance at School among Adolescent School Boys and Girls in Korea

Abstract
In many cases of non-attendance at school, there is still needed to define the differences in the mechanisms which lead to different types of school non-attendance, for example, those in which separation anxiety predominates in contrast to those where phobic avoidance or depressive disorder is the main psychopathology. It may be possible to establish subtypes of school non-attendance based on individual differences in psychopathological measures of axiety, and tests of level of aspiration and neuroticism in different adolescents at different ages. In the conceptual classification of school non-attendance, there were 3kinds of students such as popular group, school refusal group and truancy group.
Popular group was classified as illness subgroup, accident subgroup and household subgroup. School refusal group was also classified as transient subgroup, true phobic subgroup, separation anxiety subgroup, and parental interruption subgroup.
By the multiple discriminant function analysis of truancy, the author extract 3 kinds of truants such as psychopathic truancy, Overanxious truancy, and accidental avoidance truancy.
The complexity of presentation and of psychopathology means that modern practice in the treatment of school non-attendance should bring together the method of psychotherapy, family therapy, behavior therapy, milieu therapy, and pharmaco-therapy in the context of out-patient, day patient or hospital in-patient treatment.
Although usually the first goal of treatment is return to school, it may be important to established whether treatment should also aim at better psychological functioning in family and peer group relationship, as well as regular attendance and academic progress at school.
